What Does TPMS Mean?

Tire Pressure Check

What does “TPMS” mean when it lights up on your vehicle’s dashboard? These four letters stand for Tire Pressure Monitoring System–a kind of safety feature which now comes standard in a wide range of vehicles. If your vehicle does not include a TPMS, you may be able to add one yourself with a little help from our parts team. Where older vehicles forced you to check your tire pressure manually, the Nissan TPMS tracks tire air pressure using built-in sensors. If the air pressure in one of more of your tires (including, in some cases, your spare) falls by 25% or more, the TPMS light will come on. You can then stop in to more or less any Cherry Hill-area gas station and refill the tires to the recommended level! See your owner’s manual for details and recommended air pressure.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System Features

Your TPMS is composed of four (or five) unique air pressure sensors, with one located in each tire. If the light comes on for any reason, check all tires, including your spare, to make sure that the levels are appropriate. If you just need to add a little air, you can use a bike pump in a pinch. If you run a flat or a blowout while driving in Sicklerville or Woodbury, the letters that appear on your dashboard will probably be far from your mind. However, you can dramatically reduce the risk of blowouts and flats–while improving your fuel economy, tire life, and carrying capacity–by keeping your tires filled to the proper level. That’s where your TPMS comes in.

Benefits of Proper Tire Inflation

The risks of underinflated tires are many and severe, but on the other hand, there are many benefits to keeping your tires inflated to the proper levels. That’s another way of saying that any and every driver would be wise to take advantage of their Tire Pressure Monitoring System. When you see the letters TPMS on your Nissan dashboard, take action quickly to get back on the road with:

  • Reduced tread movement, leading to lower rates of tread wear and longer tire life.
  • Reduced rolling resistance, leading to improvements in fuel economy
  • Increased grip and water dispersion, leading to a reduced risk of hydroplaning, better traction in inclement weather, and more responsive acceleration.

If your TPMS light keeps coming on, check that spare! Tires lose air pressure every month, even when they’re not in use, and cold or hot weather can cause significant fluctuations. If the spare tire isn’t the issue, schedule tire service at Nissan of Turnersville and let us take a closer look. Failing to schedule tire rotation may be causing your tires to lose air more quickly.
